In Her Shoes (18): Callie from Prada & Prejudice

In Her Shoes is a weekly bookish meme hosted by Vanya at YA Story Teller. To participate, simply put yourself in the shoes of a heroine you've recently read about, and then talk about what you would do in her place, or what you've learned from her.

Featuring this week:
Callie from Prada & Prejudice

Callie is the main character in Prada & Prejudice by Mandy Hubbard. She is one of my all time favorite female characters because of the tremendous character growth she goes through in this novel. At the beginning of Prada & Prejudice Callie is described to be as the geek of her group of peers who have taken a school trip to London. She is a bit of an outsider and kinda feels intimidated by a group of popular girls who are what you could call the resident mean girls in the group so she decides to buy a pair of Prada shoes to impress them and she ends up by a series of events, time traveling to 1815.

What I loved about Callie is that she starts out as an incredibly self conscious girl, not very comfortable with being smart and her capabilities as a person. But going back in time (to the 1800s) where women are so incredibly suppressed and controlled by societal convention, she gets to realize that she is stronger than she thinks and that she doesn't need to impress anyone in order to feel worthy of respect and love.

I wouldn't change a thing about her because I liked that Callie realizes by the end of the story, that when confronted with prejudice of any sort, the most important thing to do is to be aware of who one is as a person and to not be affected by people who bully or are condescending/judgmental towards your person without knowing you. I also loved that Callie was a funny character who was a loyal and caring friend. She handled her troubles with strength, charm, and grace.
