This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:
For Darkness Shows the Stars by Diana Peterfreund
Release Date: June 12th 2012 by Balzer + Bray
Format: Hardcover
Goodreads Summary:
Generations ago, a genetic experiment gone wrong—the Reduction—decimated humanity, giving rise to a Luddite nobility who outlawed most technology.
Eighteen-year-old Luddite Elliot North has always known her place in this caste system. Four years ago Elliot refused to run away with her childhood sweetheart, the servant Kai, choosing duty to her family’s estate over love. But now the world has changed: a new class of Post-Reductionists is jumpstarting the wheel of progress and threatening Luddite control; Elliot’s estate is floundering; and she’s forced to rent land to the mysterious Cloud Fleet, a group of shipbuilders that includes renowned explorer Captain Malakai Wentforth—an almost unrecognizable Kai. And while Elliott wonders if this could be their second chance, Kai seems determined to show Elliot exactly what she gave up when she abandoned him.
But Elliot soon discovers her childhood friend carries a secret—-one that could change the society in which they live…or bring it to its knees. And again, she’s faced with a choice: cling to what she’s been raised to believe, or cast her lot with the only boy she’s ever loved, even if she has lost him forever.
Inspired by Jane Austen’s PERSUASION, FOR DARKNESS SHOWS THE STARS is a breathtaking romance about opening your mind to the future and your heart to the one person you know can break it.

Reasons I want to own and read this book:
1. Look at the cover! It's SO pretty! The stars, the dress, the coloring.. just makes it all seem so ethereal and otherworldly even. I love it!
2. This book mixes several genres. Not only is it a dystopian novel, but its post apocalyptic, science fiction, a romance and a retelling in some ways! Of what? None other than Jane Austen's Persuasion. Hells yea!
3. It is never easy to write a novel inspired by Jane Austen because she was such a literary maven and that this book is set in a post apocalyptic-ish world yet is inspired by a classic novel sounds really cool to me! I likes it! A LOT!
4. The title of this book - so poetic and full of meaning already. For Darkness Shows the Stars. Indeed it does!
The cover really does NOT look bad. *g* And I can absolutely understand your reasons! It seems there are dozens of great books coming out this year, and there is not nearly enough time to read them all. ; ( Damn.
ReplyDeleteAnyway: Happy Wednesday!

ReplyDeleteThat's me being really excited. People think I'm crazy when I say that Persuasion is my second favorite Jane Austen book (after Pride & Prejudice, of course), and I am so thrilled at someone doing a modern/futuristic take on such beautiful story! And that cover is GORGEOUS! Thanks for letting us know about this one!
