Waiting on Wednesday (13): My Life in Black and White

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating. Visit Breaking The Spine to see more entries!

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:
My Life in Black and White by Natasha Friend
Release Date: June 28th 2012 by Viking Juvenile
 Format: Hardcover
 Goodreads Summary:
What if you lost the thing that made you who you are?

Lexi has always been stunning. Her butter-colored hair and perfect features have helped her attract friends, a boyfriend, and the attention of a modeling scout. But everything changes the night Lexi's face goes through a windshield. Now she's not sure what's worse: the scars she'll have to live with forever, or what she saw going on between her best friend and her boyfriend right before the accident. With the help of her trombone-playing, defiantly uncool older sister and a guy at school recovering from his own recent trauma, Lexi learns she's much more than just a pretty face.
Reasons I want to read & own this book:
1. The cover. I just love it. I think it's really cool and interesting. The black and white spots kinda look like the tips of arrows so I'm wondering if they allude to the protagonist on the cover being confused about what direction to take in her life. They also seem might signify the shattering of something into little pieces or something along those lines. Regardless, I think it's eye catching.
2. The genre. Contemporary Young Adult. After reading and loving Anna and the French Kiss & Lola and the Boy Next Door, I have been dying to find more YA contemporary/realistic fiction books to read.
3. The synopsis. I am always intrigued about books that talk about physical perfection and deal with how people view themselves in relation to what they look like. It's a topic that affects everybody, regardless of age so it should be interesting to see how the author tackles that topic.

  1. Oh my goodness! This sounds like it would be so good. I also really love the cover, it kind of looks to me like it could be little shards of glass like what she went through in the accident! Thanks for sharing this! I can’t wait to read it.

And about the cover --> Yess. The shards of glass from the accident. So true. I think it's that, too.

  2. WOW! Wow, wow, wow, wow... Jen, I'm going to have to start following on Goodreads because I have no idea how you always manage to find so many amazing books that I've never heard of before! x) I love that cover & synopsis too, and I love how you compared this to Anna & Lola -- because those are always the first two books I think of when I see a contemporary book as well! Isn't it the same for everyone? x)

Absolutely amazing pick for your WOW as always, Jennifer! I can't wait to read this sweet-sounding and touching contemporary book now too! :) <3

I had the same thing happen to me with the Anna and the French Kiss thing... Ever since I've read it I've been on the look out for more contemporary novels.

  10. I've been waiting for this for awhile! I love that she's got an uncool sister, I feel like it's rare to find a YA book that focuses on an "uncool" sibling as a secondary character. Sounds like a great contemporary, and I absolutely love the cover (I've always thought the triangles look like stereo buttons - like play, rewind, fast forward, etc).

    Great pick!

    1. Thanks :) I can't wait for this one either!

Ohhh. Stereo buttons? Interestinggg. Now that you mention it and I look at it again, so truee! The triangles totally do look like stereo buttons. Good eye ;)

So with you on the sister. They usually don't tend to focus on the uncool siblings in YA. Should be interesting to read about her and the dynamic she has with the protagonist.

  13. I think this could really be a great book! I'm always hesitating when it comes to books such as this one because often enough authors try to do something and get a message out and while trying to achieve that, they do the exact opposite. Does that make sense? Anyway, I hope many people will read and review it, so that I'll be able to make a choice as to whether it'd be something for me or not. *g*

    1. It does make sense. And I get why you are a bit hesitant. I'm like you, if I'm not too sure about it, I try to wait for the reviews to come in to get a feel for the vibe of the book.
