In Her Shoes (22): Vivian from Immortal City

In Her Shoes is a weekly bookish meme hosted by Vanya at YA Story Teller. To participate, simply put yourself in the shoes of a heroine you've recently read about, and then talk about what you would do in her place, or what you've learned from her.

Featuring this week:
Vivian from Immortal City

Vivian is a secondary character in the YA Urban fantasy/romance Immortal City by Scott Speer. In Immortal City, the characters live in a city where Angels are the equivalent to celebrities. Vivian is what you would call the resident 'mean girl' of the story. I typically tend to talk about female characters who are great role models and amazing heroines but you all know, not all characters can be redeemed. Some characters tend to act badly because between choosing to do the right thing and the wrong, they go for the bad every single time. Why? because sometimes being mean gives people a sense of control and that's what is going on with Vivian.

Would I change something about Vivian? - Oh, yes. I would change every single thing. She is shallow, materialistic, entitled, manipulative, self absorbed, selfish and superficial. But I always love to see characters like these in novels because they always push the heroes and heroines to become more active instead of being passive and they just help highlight how amazing the good characters are because the reader can see with immense clarity which characters are truly special compared to the one's who are plainly vapid and nonredeemable.

In Her Shoes (21): Gwen from Immortal City

In Her Shoes is a weekly bookish meme hosted by Vanya at YA Story Teller. To participate, simply put yourself in the shoes of a heroine you've recently read about, and then talk about what you would do in her place, or what you've learned from her.

Featuring this week:
Gwen Moore from Immortal City

Gwen is a secondary character in the YA Urban fantasy/romance Immortal City by Scott Speer. In Immortal City, the characters live in a city where Angels are the equivalent to celebrities. Personality wise, I would say that Gwen is a very vibrant, bubbly, outgoing, and lovely person. She is the resident bff (best friend) of the female lead in Immortal City (Maddy). What I really love about Gwen is that she really balances Maddy out as a friend. Thing is, Maddy, who is the female lead in Immortal City, is a bit more serious for her age and mature because she has had such a lonely and difficult upbringing. And to me Gwen is great in the sense that she always reminds Maddy to be young and to have fun and encourages her to kinda step out of her shell, which Maddy needs tremendously.

Would I change a thing about Gwen? Not really. I love her warmth as a friend and the fact that she is just so full of life and excitement. I think she really balances the cast of characters in Immortal City with her lively energy, especially Maddy. And she definitely is a very fun and endearing character to read about.

Waiting on Wednesday (32): Natural Born Angel

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating. Visit Breaking The Spine to see more entries!

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:
Natural Born Angel (Immortal City #2) by Scott Speer
Release Date:  April 2013 by Razorbill
 Format: Hardcover

 Goodreads Summary:
Life turned upside down for Maddy Montgomery when she found out she was half-Angel and was catapulted into the scene of flashbulbs, paparazzi, and the fervent adulation that comes with being in the celebrity Angel world. She's trying to juggle her ordinary life—high school, family, friends—with the intense demands of being in the public eye as heartthrob Angel Jackson Godspeed's girlfriend.

And now Maddy must face the most difficult choice of her life. She's been offered the chance to become a Guardian. This means entering into dangerous and high stakes training, with no guarantee that she can succeed. But more than that, it would mean leaving her mortal life behind—forever—and allying with the Angels at a time when their relationship with humans is heading for war. . . .

Reasons I want to read & own this book:
1. The world building. I am currently reading Immortal City (book 1) and loving the alternate version of Los Angeles that Scott Speer has created where angels are the equivalent to celebrities in society. And the characters within this series are really fleshed out, well developed characters that make the reader easily invest themselves in to what is happening to them.

2. The cover. Yes, I have a huge case of coverlove with these books. I just love the juxtaposition of having angels in such a sunny setting because the typical thing to see is dark and mysterious angel book covers. But not with these. They have a slight tropical feel to them in a way, that is airy and kinda lovely. Loveesss it!

What do you guys think? :)

In Her Shoes (20): Maddy from Immortal City

In Her Shoes is a weekly bookish meme hosted by Vanya at YA Story Teller. To participate, simply put yourself in the shoes of a heroine you've recently read about, and then talk about what you would do in her place, or what you've learned from her.

Featuring this week:
Maddy Montgomery from Immortal City

Maddy is the female lead in the YA Urban fantasy/romance Immortal City by Scott Speer. In Immortal City, Maddy, lives a in a city where Angels are the equivalent to celebrities. Personality wise, I would say that Maddy is very smart, reserved, sweet, down to earth and loyal girl. Maddy lost her parents at a young age and has had to sort of support herself by working at her uncle's diner before school. I would say that the fact that Maddy has had to grow up before her time has made her very mature and it makes it hard for her to relate to her peers (as she is in her final year of high school and about to start college). Maddy because of her maturity kinda finds it hard to pick up on social or romantic cues, not the type of girl to party, very serious.

Would I change a thing about Maddy? Not really. Maddy really has done the best she can with the hand she was dealt with at birth. She studies and works hard, she is a loyal friend and outstanding niece. She is not materialistic and is very smart and kind hearted. I really am enjoying Immortal City right now and reading about Maddy's journey. She is a really great character and a person you easily want to root for so she can have her share of happiness in life.
